Sulphite Free Wines: The End of Your Hangover?
Leave any reservations you may have about sulphite free wines at the door and enjoy a bottle (or two) guilt-free because rumour has it that it doesn’t given you a hangover.
Although not proven one hundred percent, many people who have enjoyed a tall glass of sulphite free wine, report back the morning after with few ill effects! If true, this would mean no more curling up in bed on your precious day off after a night of excess and no need to float around like a ghost either.
Of course, it all comes down to moderation. If you drink too much natural wine, you will still get a hangover which is caused by dehydration of the body. This is why drinking sensibly is vital with men recommended to drink no more than between 3-4 units a day and women to drink between 2-3 units of alcohol per day.
The reason why drinking sulphite free wine results in a less severe hangover the morning after is that it contains less sulphites which are notorious for making you dehydrated and in the case of those who may have an allergy to sulphites, dizzy and uncomfortable.
So, if sulphites are so bad for you why don’t they remove them from wines altogether? Sadly, you can’t have a bottle of wine without sulphites as they are part of the vinification process and help to bring a wine its long life and flavour. Without sulphites present, your favourite bottle might be a bit lifeless and hollow tasting, to say the least.
However, by decreasing the level of sulphites within your wine, you can lower the chance of a nasty hangover as it is less sugary, meaning that chances of dehydration are far lesser. Also, if you’ve ever had a glass of wine and felt utterly awful afterwards, it could be not because you’re a lightweight drinker but that you actually have a tolerance to the sulphites. The next time you try a glass of wine, take note of whether you feel dizzy, have a headache and a general sense of grogginess almost straight away. This will give you an almost instant sense of whether or not you have an allergy to it.
If you want to make one healthy change to your lifestyle, why not choose a natural wine? You won’t regret it.
